Pregnancy is the most wonderful phase in a woman’s life. But, how will you know if you are pregnant – apart from taking a pregnancy test?

You can know it through the early pregnancy signs. Though the signs of early pregnancy vary depending on the body, some classic signs help you know about your pregnancy in the first month itself. 

For most women, it starts with a missed period. But many other signs and symptoms can help you with detection. 

Early Signs of Pregnancy:-

  1. Fatigue 

In the initial phase, most women feel lazy or tired. And the reason for tiredness is a high level of progesterone, which causes hormonal imbalance in the body. 

  • However, no one knows what causes sleepiness in the first trimester of pregnancy. Women feel tired in the first trimester – when they cannot exert. 

Besides, lower levels of blood sugar and blood pressure are two contributing factors that may cause fatigue. 

  • However, it gets normal once the first trimester of pregnancy is over. Additionally, a balanced diet helps to deal with the condition early on.
  1. Frequent trips to the washroom

It is the first sign that indicates you might be pregnant. Even before you miss your periods – you may notice that you have an urge to urinate quite often. And this happens because you have more blood in your body than before. 

  • The body’s blood supply increases when you’re pregnant, and the kidney filters the blood to remove waste. And the waste leaves your body as urine, hence the urge. 
  • With more blood in your body, you will have to urinate several times a day. Hormonal imbalance is also one reason – why this may happen. 
  1. Morning sickness

Morning sickness is a common symptom and happens to most women. Nausea happens as early as one week after the pregnancy – or for some women, it starts before the test is confirmed. 

  • However, there are various levels of nausea a woman may experience. You might experience nausea without vomiting or with it. Also, morning sickness is normal during pregnancy. But when the body is dehydrated, you could feel lethargic. 

Though the exact cause of morning sickness is unknown, hormonal changes in the body could contribute to the system. Additionally, having fluids can prevent the condition. 

  1. Sore breasts 

In the initial stages of pregnancy, your breasts can be tender to touch. The soreness is almost similar to the breast soreness – you experience during or before periods. 

  • For some women – the nipples start to enlarge or darken. However, breast soreness is temporary, and it fades away after a month or so – when there is a change in hormones. 
  • You may also experience pain in the breasts after conception – and at times, discomfort. You may also notice that your breasts have become large – and your bra is tighter than before. Your body may adjust to hormonal changes as time passes. 
  1. Missed period 

It is a clear sign that indicates you are pregnant. After conception, your body produces hormones that stop the ovulation process and shed the uterus lining, called periods. 

  • This simply means that your period cycle has stopped, and you won’t get your periods until you give birth to a baby after nine months. 

However, missing the period isn’t always a sign of getting pregnant. Some women may also miss periods due to stress, hormonal imbalance, or any other infection in the body. But yes, it is the first sign – that gives you a hint of being pregnant. 

Lesser common signs of pregnancy

Food cravings 

A food craving is another sign of early pregnancy. Besides, food is a complex term during pregnancy. 

  • Some women love to have spicy food – while some love to relish desserts, some may crave certain foods or feel constantly hungry. Yes, feeling hungry is also a sign of pregnancy. 

Unknowingly you may gorge on food and may do it often. However, women also experience food aversions during pregnancy – and may dislike some foods they loved earlier. 

Also, you might not like the smell of certain foods or develop an allergy to them. Different women experience different symptoms related to food during pregnancy.

Light spotting 

Spotting is not always a bad sign, as it indicates that your embryo has been implanted in the lining of your uterus. And the implantation takes place several days after the conception and not immediately. 

  • The spotting or bleeding looks like small drops of blood or brown like discharge from the vagina. Also, it can start with your regular period cycle and may continue for a few days – longer than your normal period cycle. 

With spots, most women think it’s light periods and are not pregnant. However, you must get tested for pregnancy upon experiencing any other signs of spots. 

Bloating and mood swings 

Hormonal changes in the body during pregnancy can also cause bloating. It is quite similar to what you feel during the menstrual cycle. In addition, hormonal changes in the body cause your digestive system to slow down, which causes constipation. 

  • Also, as your hormones continue to change, it can lead to mood swings. In the initial stages of pregnancy, most women experience mood swings. At times, mood swings can cause stress and anxiety – so this is a sign to watch out for.

Many of the signs listed above aren’t unique to pregnancy. For example, your stomach can get bloated because of acidity. However, missed periods and constant fatigue are the two most important signs to look out for.
